Since 1981, the Paul do Boquilobo Nature Reserve has been considered by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve.

This was the first Portuguese area to integrate the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, being recognized as a representative sample of a terrestrial ecosystem where ways of reconciling biodiversity conservation and sustainable  development are sought.

In 1996, it was also designated a Wetland of International Importance under theRamsar Convention🇧🇷 Since 1999, due to its importance for the avifauna, it is also classified as a Special Protection Area according to a Directive No. 2009/147/CE🇧🇷

The figure of a Biosphere Reserve simultaneously contributes to the conservation of natural values, favoring the conservation of the landscape, ecosystems and species, promoting the balance between nature and social and cultural development,  and economic, promoting sustainable development.

The agro-rural values of the territories are important assets that cannot be relegated to secondary plans. The development opportunities of these territories have always focused mainly on their agroforestry potential. But in a period of economic and financial instability, in which the globalization of agricultural markets has resulted in a decrease in production prices, and at the same time in “commodity” speculation, it is not easy to envision the future of territories and rural populations. There are, however, other values, which the agro-rural complex holds, and which society, in particular the urban one, recognizes and values.

Territorial cohesion, landscape value, diversification of activities in rural areas and biodiversity are key values that directly or indirectly generate new economic value.

RBPB's development strategy incorporates all these factors. We want to maintain and improve conservation potential and combine it with sustainable development that takes into account people and economic activities.
